SUMMARY:Salvation and Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:According to an analysis from NJ Advanced Media for 5 years of police use-of-force data from every department in the State\, Black people were three times more likely to be punched\, kicked\, pepper sprayed\, struck with a baton and attacked by a dog in police use-of-force situations and more than twice as likely to be shot.  Very few departments analyze racial profiling.  Of more than 4\,600 uses of force against people under the age of 18\, slightly more than half the subjects were Black\, though they represent only 14.5% of the child population in New Jersey. \n \nWe must break the cycle of violence inflicted upon our communities by: \n\nImplementing community oversight of local police departments;\nUnifying reporting standards and systems; requiring culturally competent implicit bias and psychological analysis and de-escalation training\, and expanding auditing measures to ensure the training is effectively implemented;\nRemoving officers who violate the civil rights of African Americans or demonstrate bias;\nMandating in-car and body-worn cameras—in conjunction with effective policies\, training\, and implementation—and the public release of footage;\nRequiring a five-year residency requirement for all law enforcement;\nDeveloping a truth and reconciliation process to faithfully deal with the history and evidence of abuse.\n\nTogether we can transform this situation!  These are all Joint Hearings Black Legislators\, Clergy and Community Leaders and the hearings will be sed as an opportunity to hear from victims as well as organize communities in how to access the data\, build an accountability commission and hold local law enforcement responsible for problematic issues.

SUMMARY:Ending Solitary Confinement in NJ - A Talk at the Ethical Culture Society in Maplewood
DESCRIPTION:What is it like to be confined to a small cell for 23 hours a day\, months and years on end\, with minimal sensory stimulation and little or no human contact? How does it affect the brain and one’s psyche? Justice Rountree\, a survivor of solitary confinement\, and Tricia Idrobo\, a UUFANJ activist will speak about solitary confinement in New Jersey jails and prisons\, its detrimental effects on individuals and the community\, and initiatives to restrict solitary confinement\, including bills A314 and S3261 in the NJ legislature. There will also be an opportunity to “virtually” experience a solitary cell.

SUMMARY:Overdose Prevention Centers Conference
DESCRIPTION:Drug overdose is now the leading cause of accidental death nationally and in New Jersey\, with more than 3\,000 New Jersey residents dying from overdose each year. Many of these deaths are preventable and as you know\, DPA works to promote policies that will help save lives through our Overdose Prevention Campaign. DPA will be launching a campaign in support of legislation (Senate Bill 3293 / Assembly Bill 4638) to establish overdose prevention centers (also known as safe consumption spaces) in response to the devastating loss of life. \nOverdose prevention centers are locations where people can legally consume previously purchased drugs under the supervision of trained staff.  The staff are able to provide immediate assistance in the case of an overdose and connect people to drug treatment\, medical care\, social services and harm reduction services.  Fear of arrest and prosecution\, as well as the stigma attached to drug use\, force people to hide their drug use or use drugs in unsafe conditions.  If these barriers were removed\, countless lives could be saved. \nPlease mark your calendars and save-the-date as Drug Policy Alliance is hosting a conference at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) on Friday\, April 5th at 10:00 am.  Join us to learn from an expert panel of public health officials\, researchers\, legal experts\, and community leaders on innovations in overdose prevention.  The event will take place at TCNJ\, 2000 Pennington Road\, Ewing\, NJ 08628 in the School of Education Building #115. For more details\, please see the flyer below. \nAdmission\, lunch and CEUs are free\, but space is limited\, so please RSVP to reserve your spot!

SUMMARY:We are 1844 No More
DESCRIPTION:“The Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits the denial of the right to vote “on account of race\, color\, or previous condition of servitude.” But New Jersey’s law that denies the right to vote to people with criminal convictions undermines the Fifteenth Amendment’s prohibition on explicit racial discrimination by linking the right to vote to a racially discriminatory criminal justice system. \nNew Jersey leads the nation in having the highest racial disparities in having the highest Black/white incarceration rates for both adults and youth\, making the laws racially discriminatory impact particularly acute.” – New Jersey Institute for Social Justice \nPlease join fellow UUs on Monday\, September 24 at the Rutger’s-New Brunswick Student Center to partake it what is sure to be a riveting and informative discussion!
