Generationally silencing communities of color with a variety of techniques has led to segregated schools\, segregated housing\, segregated neighborhoods and segregated houses of worship. If we take away peoples’ voices\, we remove their ability to be productive and they become bargaining chips as they did in the eighties and nineties as Get Tough on Crime rhetoric led to more oppressive laws with greater sanctions to gain a few extra votes\, at the expense of the human dignity of those we would not allow a voice. \nRon was incarcerated for 30 years. Through the NJ Step program\, he earned college credits\, and after parole\, received a Justice Studies degree from Rutgers. The New Jersey Institute for Social Justice employs him as the Democracy and Justice Fellow.
