SUMMARY:Redistricting Reform Best Practices for a Fairer New Jersey
DESCRIPTION:The League of Women Voters of New Jersey – together with the Fair Districts New Jersey Coalition and the Network for Responsible Public Policy – has announced a series of ten public forums taking place across the state to educate voters on gerrymandering and the legislative redistricting process\, and to present ideas for reforms. The forums\, “Redistricting Reform Best Practices for a Fairer New Jersey\,” are a continuation of the League’s voter education work to demystify a process that has a great impact on our communities and our political representation\, but that few fully understand. All events are free and open to the public. \n \nIn addition to outlining the current legislative redistricting process in New Jersey\, LWV wants to provide the public with information about anti-gerrymandering reforms in other states\, and present redistricting principles and best practices that can be applied here in New Jersey. And more importantly\, the League wants to encourage ongoing public commentary on redistricting so citizens feel empowered to participate in the next map-drawing process.‍

SUMMARY:Handling our Trash: Getting to a Circular Carbon Economy
DESCRIPTION:Americans live with waste every day ‐‐ a growing problem. Recycling is one of the ways we can have a positive impact on our environment. Recycling can also provide us with renewable sources of energy which help reduce greenhouse gases. A zero waste recycling strategy only works if we understand our shopping\, consumption and disposal habits\, with the goal to move toward zero trash sent to landfill and incineration. This knowledge will not only make us better recyclers but also better voters as we help shape local\, state and national environmental policy. This program will clear up confusion and address how to achieve renewable energy and a low-carbon economy. \n \nSpeakers: \nMatt Civello currently serves on the Manhattan Solid Waste Advisory Board helping to achieve its zero-waste goals and advises the Manhattan Borough President\, City Council and mayoral administration and others on policies and programs on furthering the City’s waste prevention\, reuse\, and recycling programs. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the non-profit Earth Matter which processes 740 tons of organic material from City residents.  Matthew does not necessarily represent the views of the MSWAB for the purpose of this event. \nDr. Serpil Guran is the Director of Rutgers EcoComplex “Clean Energy Innovation Center” and manages the new RutgersX “EcoIgnite: Clean Energy Proof of Concept Center and Accelerator” program.   She is trained on thermochemical conversion (pyrolysis and gasification) of biomass and waste materials for the production of fuels and chemicals\, and she specializes in research\, development\, and assessment of sustainable biofuel and recycling technologies\, and life cycle analysis of clean energy systems alternative fuel production systems. \nAmanda Nesheiwat\, the moderator\, currently works as the Environmental Director for the Town of Secaucus\, as well as chairwoman of their Environmental Committee and most recently as the town’s official Recycling Coordinator after receiving her certification as a recycling professional from Rutgers University in 2016. \nFree and Open to the Public \nWalk-Ins Welcome \nSuggested Donation is $10. Donations are tax-deductible. \nWestfield High School \n550 Dorian Rd\, Westfield\, NJ 07090

SUMMARY:Overdose Prevention Centers Conference
DESCRIPTION:Drug overdose is now the leading cause of accidental death nationally and in New Jersey\, with more than 3\,000 New Jersey residents dying from overdose each year. Many of these deaths are preventable and as you know\, DPA works to promote policies that will help save lives through our Overdose Prevention Campaign. DPA will be launching a campaign in support of legislation (Senate Bill 3293 / Assembly Bill 4638) to establish overdose prevention centers (also known as safe consumption spaces) in response to the devastating loss of life. \nOverdose prevention centers are locations where people can legally consume previously purchased drugs under the supervision of trained staff.  The staff are able to provide immediate assistance in the case of an overdose and connect people to drug treatment\, medical care\, social services and harm reduction services.  Fear of arrest and prosecution\, as well as the stigma attached to drug use\, force people to hide their drug use or use drugs in unsafe conditions.  If these barriers were removed\, countless lives could be saved. \nPlease mark your calendars and save-the-date as Drug Policy Alliance is hosting a conference at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) on Friday\, April 5th at 10:00 am.  Join us to learn from an expert panel of public health officials\, researchers\, legal experts\, and community leaders on innovations in overdose prevention.  The event will take place at TCNJ\, 2000 Pennington Road\, Ewing\, NJ 08628 in the School of Education Building #115. For more details\, please see the flyer below. \nAdmission\, lunch and CEUs are free\, but space is limited\, so please RSVP to reserve your spot!
