SUMMARY:Understanding NJ Local Government | LWVNJ Activist Training
DESCRIPTION:Date: Tuesday\, March 19th\nTime: 6pm – 7:30pm\nLocation: Zoom\nREGISTER FOR TRAINING \nMost people know that the actions that federal and state governments take can have major implications on the lives of millions of Americans. But what about local government?   In New Jersey\, thousands of municipal and county government officials are responsible for making critical daily decisions and delivering essential services to the communities they serve. Despite the tremendous power that local government has over our daily lives\, most people know little to nothing about what it does or how it works. \nJoin this training to learn about the structures and powers of the local government bodies that are making decisions for your community. \n\nThe Activist Training Program was launched in 2021 with the goal of providing free and nonpartisan public education and training on the knowledge and skills activists need to drive grassroots change and defend democracy. \nLWVNJ offers training in 4 core areas: \n\nUnderstanding New Jersey Government\nGrassroots Organizing\nVoter Outreach\nLegislative Advocacy\n\nThese trainings are open to League members and members of the public who support the League’s mission and goals.

SUMMARY:Rally for Clean Energy
DESCRIPTION:Join EmpowerNJ and our allies on March 11 for our first big rally and lobby day of the year as we tell NJ legislators and Governor Murphy:\n\nYES to 100% TRULY Clean Energy by 2035!\nNo Dirty Energy Schemes!\nNJ Needs a Just Transition Off Fossil Fuels!\n\nDetails and RSVP here\n\n\nWe’re in a climate emergency\, and three bills are under consideration in the NJ Legislature that could make or break NJ’s transition to truly clean\, zero emissions energy.\n\n\nThe Clean Energy Standard (S237/A1480) could move NJ onto 100% truly clean energy by 2035\, if the right amendments are made to reduce air pollutants\, protect environmental justice communities\, and create in-state green jobs.\n\n\n\nThe Unaffordable Dirty RNG Gas bill (S2275/A1462) would give away billions in new subsidies to the fossil fuel industry for dirty & expensive “renewable” natural gas and keep us on dirty energy for decades. It must be stopped!\n\n\n\nThe Low Carbon Fuel Standard (S2425/A3645) has many of the same problems as the RNG bill.  It would perpetuate the use of fossil fuels\, raise consumer costs\, and undercut real solutions to electrify New Jersey’s transportation sector.]\n\n\nOn March 11\, a joint hearing will be held on the Clean Energy Standard bill by the Senate Environment & Assembly Telecommunications Committees. This is the first time this bill will be heard by the Assembly Telecommunications Committee\, and our first big opportunity of the new legislative session to push for amendments to strengthen the bill.\n \nRSVP today for Draw The Line for REAL Clean Energy Solutions\, NO MORE Dirty Energy!

SUMMARY:UPLIFT Trans/Nonbinary+ Pastoral Care Small Group
DESCRIPTION:What is pastoral care\, exactly? Pastoral care is support with navigating life—big and small things\, joys and hardships and all those mixed together. It’s not therapy\, but a way for us to be in community together\, supporting each other. This is a space to share the hard stuff and to hold the hard stuff that others are navigating in their lives. To read more about pastoral care and find some resources to locate pastoral care\, check out this post by UU Youth Ministry. \nDuring our time together\, our lead chaplain/facilitators will share opening and closing words\, and in between\, there is time for everyone to share what’s on their heards\, and receive what others are sharing about their own lives. It’s a supportive\, judgment-free place to connect with other trans/nonbinary+ people. \nRegistration\nJoin our pastoral care community–register here! \nThis year\, the pastoral space is for adults only. If you’re a child or a youth and you’d like to have a space to talk about the hard stuff\, let us know by registering for the pastoral space and putting a note in the comments. When we have enough children and youth registered\, we’ll plan for opening additional spaces for different ages. And stay tuned for additional opportunities for children and youth to connect—we’re working on this! \nAccessibility Information\nClosed captioning will be available\, and any common chat content will also be spoken aloud. Please be mindful of processing and communication access\, and speak one at a time. Meeting will not be recorded\, and participation\, as well as what is shared\, will be confidential. There is no requirement to appear on video or to otherwise maintain “conventional” appearances. Any additional accessibility needs? Let us know by emailing lgbtq@uua.org or aballou@uua.org! We’ll do our best to ensure you can fully access the space. \nWho is this space for?\nThis is a closed event specifically for trans/nonbinary+ people. Anyone who is trans\, nonbinary\, metagender\, multigender\, genderfluid\, agender\, demigender\, genderqueer\, and otherwise not wholly or entirely cis is welcome to attend. \nYou do not have to be UU to attend\, as long as you are comfortable with this space having a UU flavor/focus. \nThis pastoral small group is for ages 18 and older. Note: anyone who is a legal adult but is enrolled in high school and/or their congregation’s youth group is asked to attend the youth space. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information contact lgbtq@uua.org. \n\n\n

In that example\, we’d briefly outline the talking points\, provide you with a sample script and then the phone number of the legislators to call. And you’d make the call right there—in real time. Or\, maybe the action is writing a letter to the editor about a justice issue. Again\, we’d provide the key talking points\, some sample language and the contact information and during that zoom meeting\, we’d collectively write our letters. Another possibility for an action is that we invite a key coalition partner to guide us in taking an action. The possibilities are almost limitless. \nYou don’t have to prepare.  You don’t have to commit to coming to every single First Friday.  This is not a committee\, nor a commitment—it is a come-as-you-are-able opportunity! \nCan’t join us on a particular Friday\, or maybe noon is just never gonna work for your schedule?  No problem!  The Google Doc will have all the information you need so that you can take the action at a time convenient for you.  Not only that— we hope you will share the action with your congregation or community\, and our one little pebble can start to produce ripples.

SUMMARY:Renewing Environmental Justice Commitments with Green Sanctuary 2030
DESCRIPTION:“Renewing Environmental Justice Commitments with Green Sanctuary 2030” \n2/21/2024\n7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. (EST)\nOnline \nRegister Here! \nSince 1989\, the Unitarian Universalist Association’s (UUA) Green Sanctuary program has provided an in-depth roadmap of actions for congregations seeking to start or deepen their climate justice work. The current iteration of the program—Green Sanctuary 2030 (GS2030)—has been updated to include a larger focus on congregational transformation and justice.  At this meeting\, learn from the recently recognized Green Sanctuary 2030 Congregation\, the UU Fellowship of Raleigh\, NC\, about the ways their congregation renewed their environmental justice commitments through the GS2030 process. \nThis is a regular meeting of UUs working on congregational transformation through climate justice held on the third Wednesday of the month; each meeting includes a short presentation on a climate justice topic\, followed by open discussion on pressing needs.
