SUMMARY:We are 1844 No More
DESCRIPTION:“The Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits the denial of the right to vote “on account of race\, color\, or previous condition of servitude.” But New Jersey’s law that denies the right to vote to people with criminal convictions undermines the Fifteenth Amendment’s prohibition on explicit racial discrimination by linking the right to vote to a racially discriminatory criminal justice system. \nNew Jersey leads the nation in having the highest racial disparities in having the highest Black/white incarceration rates for both adults and youth\, making the laws racially discriminatory impact particularly acute.” – New Jersey Institute for Social Justice \nPlease join fellow UUs on Monday\, September 24 at the Rutger’s-New Brunswick Student Center to partake it what is sure to be a riveting and informative discussion!

SUMMARY:Rally for Justice\, Stand for Fair Wages

SUMMARY:Interfaith Candidates Forum - CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:For those UUs and our friends who live in the 7th and 11th congressional districts an interfaith nonpartisan candidates forum on October 14\, 2018 might be of interest.  (If you aren’t sure in which district you live\, District 7 covers Hunterdon\, most of Somerset\, and a portion of Morris counties; Leonard Lance (R) is the current congressman for the 7th.  District 11 touches on District 7 to the east and represents the bulk of Morris Co. and includes parts of Essex\, Passaic and Warren counties.  Rodney Frelinghuysen (R) is the retiring representative from the 11th. \n \nThe October forum is a collaborative interfaith effort to introduce voters to the major candidates running for the 7th and 11th congressional districts and for the US Senate seat from NJ. Attached is a draft of the plan for the event which we hope will gather a broad range of faith communities. Our intention is to be heard by the candidates\, as well as to be heard by them. We are looking to highlight the issues of gun violence prevention\, immigration\, and environmental responsibility.

DESCRIPTION:Please stand with us on Saturday\, October 27\, at 12:00 PM at Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church\, located at 231-251 Seymour Avenue in Newark\, NJ.  \nDr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. visited Mount Calvary 50 years ago to build support for the Poor People’s Campaign. \n \nNinety-four percent of Black voters cast their ballots for Governor Phil Murphy in 2017. Without this support from the Black community\, it is unlikely that Phil Murphy would be New Jersey’s governor: Fifty-three percent of white voters supported his opponent. But nine months into his administration\, Governor Murphy has not focused on critical issues facing the 94%. The Institute and its partners call on Governor Phil Murphy to take action on the following racial justice issues: \n  \n\nTransforming the Youth Justice System: A Black child in New Jersey is 30 times more likely to be incarcerated than a white child — the highest disparity rate in America. Thus\, even though research shows that Black and white young people commit most offenses at similar rates\, just 22 white kids are incarcerated in New Jersey.\nIn the wake of the historic youth prison closure announcements\, Governor Murphy must dedicate his time\, platform\, and resources to prioritizing the fundamental transformation of New Jersey’s failed youth justice system. This will require Governor Murphy to commit to addressing the structural racism that devours young Black and Brown kids in the current system. \nMurphy should convene a youth justice commission with a mandate to create and oversee a comprehensive youth justice plan that\, with meaningful community input\, addresses the policies and practices that drive the racial disparities\, prioritizes alternatives to incarceration and rehabilitation\, and invests the anticipated $20 million closure cost savings into community-based programs in neighborhoods most impacted by incarceration. The commission should also develop a plan and timeline for the closure of New Jersey’s three youth prisons\, including its most secure youth prison — the Juvenile Medium Security Facility. No construction should commence before the commission issues its recommendations. \nGovernor Murphy must also hold public hearings throughout the state to provide updates on the status of the youth prison closures and to seek meaningful input on next steps. The construction of the new youth rehabilitation centers should not commence until the task force issues its recommendations.\n\n\nClosing the Racial Wealth Gap: The median net worth for New Jersey’s white families is $271\,402 — the highest in the nation. But the median net worth for New Jersey’s Latino and Black families is just $7\,020 and $5\,900\, respectively.\nMurphy should champion the effort to close the racial wealth gap by supporting a statewide plan for individual development accounts (IDAs)\, which would provide matched savings for low-income residents. Murphy should also lead the effort to empower poor residents in communities segregated by race through deep government infrastructure investments that will raise the property values in communities of color\, thereby raising the value of most families’ largest asset — their home. This investment should support and protect current homeowners from losing that asset\, as well as expand homeownership among residents of color\, including through providing grants for down payment assistance and ensuring access to low-interest\, fixed-rate mortgage loans.\n\n\nRestoring the Right to Vote to People with Criminal Convictions: New Jersey denies the vote to nearly 100\,000 people who are in prison\, on parole\, or on probation. Half of those denied the right to vote are Black\, though Black people comprise just 15 percent of the state’s population.\nGovernor Murphy must commit to signing and using the power of his office to urge the passage of S-2100/A-3456\, historic legislation that will restore the precious right to vote to people in prison\, on parole\, or on probation. New Jersey first denied the right to vote to people with criminal convictions in 1844\, the same year it adopted a constitution that restricted voting to white men. By continuing to link the right to vote to a racially discriminatory criminal justice system\, New Jersey is today accomplishing the same racial exclusion that was commonplace in 1844 and meant to be eradicated by the 15th Amendment. \nNew Jersey’s most stark and pressing racial disparities are calling out for courageous leadership and Governor Murphy can and should make clear that he is as committed to the 94 percent as they were to him. \nWe stand ready to work with him when he does.

SUMMARY:Interfaith Vigil for Pittsburgh
DESCRIPTION:I sit here\, wavering between anger and sadness at yet another week of senseless violence perpetrated by domestic terrorists. At the insufficient responses from our government leaders and what their inaction is telling our children. That this is “the new normal” — to sit and offer up prayers or good thoughts but to do nothing to improve things or to call out evil and injustice. Beloved\, there is nothing “normal” about violence of any kind\, especially when it stems from intentional ignorance and fear. Normal is showing up for each other\, speaking up to say\, “We are here for you” and “NO\, this will not stand!” when another’s life and safety is stolen by senseless fear. \n \n\nWe have an opportunity to do just that in a few days. Our sister congregation\, Congregation Ohr Shalom (67 Kent Place in Summit)\, is hosting an Interfaith Vigil for Pittsburgh on Thursday\, November 1st at 7:30 PM. I implore you and your children be in solidarity\, holding our Jewish friends during this time of pain and saying in one loud voice\, “Hate is abnormal and it has no home here!” \nOur religious freedom is a right purchased for all people by the literal blood\, sweat and tears our ancestors. Yet there are some in this country (many of whom live with access and acceptance that I’ll never see in my lifetime) that believe their rights outweigh ours because we don’t worship the same (or any) god. Because we choose to love who we love regardless of gender\, sex\, race\, ability or creed. Because we are willing to give up some of our privilege to give someone else a fair chance to thrive. I choose to not be afraid of difference and I will embrace others as equals. That is the message I want to send to our kids. Please join us in this fight for our lives. \nHolding you all in love and light\,\nJamaine

SUMMARY:NJDEP Public Hearing: Franklin Compressor Station
DESCRIPTION:The NJ Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has scheduled a Public Hearing for the Freshwater Wetlands Permit Application for the Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) Project with Compressor Station 206 and pipelines in Old Bridge\, Sayreville\, and through Raritan Bay.\nRally will be outside at 5:30 p.m.\nIf built\, the compressor station emissions will pollute the entire area for decades\, and\, once in operation\, there is little doubt that the company will add more turbines in the future. We need to tell the NJDEP that we oppose the construction of Compressor Station 206 as well as the pipelines which will dredge up even more pollution. The risks to our safety and health demand that we stand up for ourselves\, the environment and future generations. Come out and bring friends and neighbors. \nHEARINGS: People do not need to arrive at 6PM or stay for the entire hearing.\n* NJDEP staff will facilitate the meeting.\n* People usually get 3 minutes to speak at a microphone in front of the group about their concerns\, and a stenographer records it. It’s not like the FERC meeting where you went into a separate room.\n* If you want to speak\, sign-up when you arrive. Talking points will be provided.\n* Pre-written comments can be submitted at the meeting & more comments can be sent after the meeting up until November 20. Include your name & full address on written comments.\n* We DO expect that pro-NESE people will be there to voice their support (like they were at the FERC public meetings)\, so we need many concerned folks there to tell NJDEP why we do not want NESE. \nNJDEP’s PUBLIC HEARING RULES OF CONDUCT\nThe purpose of the hearing is to gather public comment from anyone who wishes to speak. Any action taken by any person that prevents the public from commenting is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Anyone who violates these rules of conduct may be removed from the hearing.\n* No signs mounted on sticks\, or otherwise attached to an object\, are allowed within the auditorium\n* No food or drink is allowed within the auditorium\n* Please remain seated until called forward to provide comment\n* No interrupting when someone is speaking\n* No unruly/disruptive behavior (i.e. yelling\, chanting\, use of foul language)\n* Testimony will be limited to three minutes per speaker

SUMMARY:FaithAction led Rally for Jorge Chajon
DESCRIPTION:An important\, UU FaithAction led and directed rally\, happening in Newark\, Friday Nov. 9th at 11:45 p.m.\, Federal Immigration Court\, 97 Broad St. Newark NJ.  I am urging my fellow UUs to turn out on Nov. 9th\, if at all possible. \n \nWe have the chance to make a real difference in the life of one family\, the Chajons\, caught up in the draconian changes in US policy\, but also to many other detainees languishing in prisons for no other reason than they sought refuge\, safety and a better life free from grinding poverty\, gangs and endemic violence. \n\nIf you haven’t yet signed the petition to release Jorge Chajon from his 17 month detention in the Elizabeth Detention Center\, you may do so here:\nhttps://www.change.org/p/kristen-peck-keep-the-chajon-famil… \nWhat’s Different About this Rally: \nMany of you have already signed the petition circulated by NJ UU from Beacon/Summit\, Dr. Kristen Peck supporting 15 month detainee\, Jorge Chajon. \nUUs and our allies will be staging this rally in front of the ICE Regional Office the same day as what may be Jorge’s final detention hearing. Jorge came to the US as a 13 year old from Guatemala\, making the dangerous journey to follow his parents. He was granted DACA status by the previous administration and has no criminal record. He has a US citizen wife\, a 2 year old and 10 month old child he has never visited outside of detention center visits. \nOur goal is to create a media event\, humanizing it with the story of one man and his family and dramatizing the ongoing plight of many like them here in NJ and across the US. We will unfurl a large banner made up of some of the 2500+ petitions and some of us will sit in on the hearing to show our support to the judge and staff for Jorge’s case. \nPlease let me know if you are able to join me and fellow UUs and lay activists for all or part of that Friday afternoon. We could use extra helpers\, marshals\, social media/smart camera operators\, etc. Please reach out to our office to volunteer www.uufaithaction.org. A crowd helps! Invite all and sundry\, and expect more communications including a press release over the next several days. \nAnd thanks. We amplify each others voices and those whose voices are suppressed or lost in the shuffle. I appreciate your ongoing support for UU FaithAction NJ.

I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights\, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people — sometimes in the most brutal ways possible — it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered\, and that we continue to fight for justice.”\nTransgender Day of Remembrance founder Gwendolyn Ann Smith\nLet us gather for this essential work which will move us through lamentation to solidarity and support.\n\n\nQuestions and offers to participate\, volunteer\, or sponsor can be directed to Rev.
