SUMMARY:Interfaith Vigil for Pittsburgh
DESCRIPTION:I sit here\, wavering between anger and sadness at yet another week of senseless violence perpetrated by domestic terrorists. At the insufficient responses from our government leaders and what their inaction is telling our children. That this is “the new normal” — to sit and offer up prayers or good thoughts but to do nothing to improve things or to call out evil and injustice. Beloved\, there is nothing “normal” about violence of any kind\, especially when it stems from intentional ignorance and fear. Normal is showing up for each other\, speaking up to say\, “We are here for you” and “NO\, this will not stand!” when another’s life and safety is stolen by senseless fear. \n \n\nWe have an opportunity to do just that in a few days. Our sister congregation\, Congregation Ohr Shalom (67 Kent Place in Summit)\, is hosting an Interfaith Vigil for Pittsburgh on Thursday\, November 1st at 7:30 PM. I implore you and your children be in solidarity\, holding our Jewish friends during this time of pain and saying in one loud voice\, “Hate is abnormal and it has no home here!” \nOur religious freedom is a right purchased for all people by the literal blood\, sweat and tears our ancestors. Yet there are some in this country (many of whom live with access and acceptance that I’ll never see in my lifetime) that believe their rights outweigh ours because we don’t worship the same (or any) god. Because we choose to love who we love regardless of gender\, sex\, race\, ability or creed. Because we are willing to give up some of our privilege to give someone else a fair chance to thrive. I choose to not be afraid of difference and I will embrace others as equals. That is the message I want to send to our kids. Please join us in this fight for our lives. \nHolding you all in love and light\,\nJamaine

SUMMARY:NJDEP Public Hearing: Franklin Compressor Station
DESCRIPTION:The NJ Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has scheduled a Public Hearing for the Freshwater Wetlands Permit Application for the Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) Project with Compressor Station 206 and pipelines in Old Bridge\, Sayreville\, and through Raritan Bay.\nRally will be outside at 5:30 p.m.\nIf built\, the compressor station emissions will pollute the entire area for decades\, and\, once in operation\, there is little doubt that the company will add more turbines in the future. We need to tell the NJDEP that we oppose the construction of Compressor Station 206 as well as the pipelines which will dredge up even more pollution. The risks to our safety and health demand that we stand up for ourselves\, the environment and future generations. Come out and bring friends and neighbors. \nHEARINGS: People do not need to arrive at 6PM or stay for the entire hearing.\n* NJDEP staff will facilitate the meeting.\n* People usually get 3 minutes to speak at a microphone in front of the group about their concerns\, and a stenographer records it. It’s not like the FERC meeting where you went into a separate room.\n* If you want to speak\, sign-up when you arrive. Talking points will be provided.\n* Pre-written comments can be submitted at the meeting & more comments can be sent after the meeting up until November 20. Include your name & full address on written comments.\n* We DO expect that pro-NESE people will be there to voice their support (like they were at the FERC public meetings)\, so we need many concerned folks there to tell NJDEP why we do not want NESE. \nNJDEP’s PUBLIC HEARING RULES OF CONDUCT\nThe purpose of the hearing is to gather public comment from anyone who wishes to speak. Any action taken by any person that prevents the public from commenting is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Anyone who violates these rules of conduct may be removed from the hearing.\n* No signs mounted on sticks\, or otherwise attached to an object\, are allowed within the auditorium\n* No food or drink is allowed within the auditorium\n* Please remain seated until called forward to provide comment\n* No interrupting when someone is speaking\n* No unruly/disruptive behavior (i.e. yelling\, chanting\, use of foul language)\n* Testimony will be limited to three minutes per speaker

SUMMARY:FaithAction led Rally for Jorge Chajon
DESCRIPTION:An important\, UU FaithAction led and directed rally\, happening in Newark\, Friday Nov. 9th at 11:45 p.m.\, Federal Immigration Court\, 97 Broad St. Newark NJ.  I am urging my fellow UUs to turn out on Nov. 9th\, if at all possible. \n \nWe have the chance to make a real difference in the life of one family\, the Chajons\, caught up in the draconian changes in US policy\, but also to many other detainees languishing in prisons for no other reason than they sought refuge\, safety and a better life free from grinding poverty\, gangs and endemic violence. \n\nIf you haven’t yet signed the petition to release Jorge Chajon from his 17 month detention in the Elizabeth Detention Center\, you may do so here:\nhttps://www.change.org/p/kristen-peck-keep-the-chajon-famil… \nWhat’s Different About this Rally: \nMany of you have already signed the petition circulated by NJ UU from Beacon/Summit\, Dr. Kristen Peck supporting 15 month detainee\, Jorge Chajon. \nUUs and our allies will be staging this rally in front of the ICE Regional Office the same day as what may be Jorge’s final detention hearing. Jorge came to the US as a 13 year old from Guatemala\, making the dangerous journey to follow his parents. He was granted DACA status by the previous administration and has no criminal record. He has a US citizen wife\, a 2 year old and 10 month old child he has never visited outside of detention center visits. \nOur goal is to create a media event\, humanizing it with the story of one man and his family and dramatizing the ongoing plight of many like them here in NJ and across the US. We will unfurl a large banner made up of some of the 2500+ petitions and some of us will sit in on the hearing to show our support to the judge and staff for Jorge’s case. \nPlease let me know if you are able to join me and fellow UUs and lay activists for all or part of that Friday afternoon. We could use extra helpers\, marshals\, social media/smart camera operators\, etc. Please reach out to our office to volunteer www.uufaithaction.org. A crowd helps! Invite all and sundry\, and expect more communications including a press release over the next several days. \nAnd thanks. We amplify each others voices and those whose voices are suppressed or lost in the shuffle. I appreciate your ongoing support for UU FaithAction NJ.

SUMMARY:Transgender Day of Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:Transgender Day of Remembrance Interfaith Worship Service\nTuesday November 20th\, 7:30pm \nUnitarian Universalist Congregation at Montclair \n67 Church Street\, Montclair\, NJ\n \n\nAll Are Welcome to Join in this Observance of Remembrance\, Mourning\, and Affirmation.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Transgender Day of Remembrance was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester\, a transgenderwoman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death\, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.\n\n“The Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights\, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people — sometimes in the most brutal ways possible — it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered\, and that we continue to fight for justice.”\nTransgender Day of Remembrance founder Gwendolyn Ann Smith\nLet us gather for this essential work which will move us through lamentation to solidarity and support.\n\n\nQuestions and offers to participate\, volunteer\, or sponsor can be directed to Rev. SUMMARY:No Fossil Fuel Campaign Launch
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday December 5th\, New Jerseyans from all corners of the state will converge in Trenton to launch a bold new campaign.  Join us aswe call on Governor Murphy to lead the way on climate initiatives by enacting an emergency moratorium on all fossil fuel projects\, and a rapid and fair transition to 100% clean renewables.\n\n\n\nWhat: Empower NJ: No Fossil Fuel Projects Campaign Launch\nWhen: Wed.\, Dec. 5th at 12:30pm to 1:30pm\nWhere: Outside the NJ Statehouse Annex Building\, 137 W. State Street\, Trenton\nProgram: Hear from grassroots leaders resisting fossil fuel expansion projects in their communities\, experts and advocates for a 100% clean renewable New Jersey.\nWhat to bring: A sign representing your fight against a fossil fuel project in NJ\, or a general sign about the urgency of the climate crisis. \nPlease share this email and facebook event to promote our campaign launch to your friends and communities! \nBackground: \nClimate change is an immediate and grave threat to the 9 million people who call New Jersey home. The combination of rising sea levels\, increasingly destructive storms\, severe and more frequent flooding events\, and other devastating climate impacts represent nothing short of an emergency. According to a 2018 report by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\, we may have as little as 12 years to reach critical levels in stopping greenhouse gas emissions before we cross irreversible climate tipping points. \nAfter Trump pulled the US out of the historic Paris Climate Agreement\, Governor Murphy signed New Jersey onto the US Climate Alliance\, a pledge to uphold the goals from Paris to limit global temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius\, and no higher than 2 degrees. We commend the Governor for this pledge\, but we simply cannot achieve this critical goal if his administration continues approving new\, long term fossil fuel infrastructure projects. Simply put\, if the Governor doesn’t take immediate action to fight climate change by stopping new sources of green house gas pollution in NJ\, and by implementing a real plan to rapidly reduce existing green house gases\, then he will be putting thousands of lives and billions of dollars in economic damage at risk. \nWe’re launching this campaign to call on the Governor to enact a moratorium on all new fossil fuel development in NJ\, including the 12 power plants and pipeline projects currently proposed in NJ\, as well as complete complete ban on fracking\, water withdrawals for fracking\, and fracking wastewater in the Delaware River Basin and New Jersey. The current Delaware River Watershed fracking moratorium is under attack by big oil and gas and the Trump administration\, and we cannot allow this toxic\, climate disrupting industry to gain a foothold in the watershed for over 10 Million people throughout the region. \nGovernor Murphy has all the evidence and regulatory tools he needs to enact an emergency moratorium on new fossil fuel development\, at least until New Jersey has a real plan to immediately reduce green house gas emissions and transition to 100% clean renewable energy. \nPlease join with us as we launch the campaign for a moratorium on fossil fuel projects and a rapid and fair transition to a 100% clean renewable energy economy! \nWe hope to see you in Trenton on Wednesday! \n\n\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:UUCMC's Earth Room Concerts presents "Deeper Than the Skin" with Reggie Harris and Greg Greenway
DESCRIPTION:For four decades\, singer-songwriter\, storyteller\, and activist Reggie Harris has brought African American spirituals\, folk\, gospel\, rock\, and the music of the civil rights movement to stages across America. Greg Greenway is a chart-topping folksinger with eight studio albums both as solo artist and as a member of the trio Brother Sun. \nReggie Harris and Greg Greenway have a unique story. Born three days apart\, ancestry flowing through the same portal of history\, Richmond\, Virginia\, they are on a pilgrimage together – one that began three decades ago. The racial divisions that are the reality of America started them in two different worlds\, but the amazing bonds of music\, respect\, admiration\, and shared vision have brought them together as friends and colleagues. \nReggie Harris is the Music Education Director of the Living Legacy Project of the UUA\, co-leading tours through the hallowed Civil Rights ground of the South. He is a Woodrow Wilson Scholar. Solo\, and in the duo\, Kim and Reggie Harris\, he has led hundreds of programs on Race and Social Justice. \nGreg Greenway was a part of the planning committee (at Reggie’s request) of Marching in the Arc of Justice\, the Unitarian Universalist conference commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Selma Voting Rights Action. He had the honor for two years of having his song\, “Rosa Parks”\, play when rosaparks.com was opened. Greg led his song\, “What Must Be Done”\, in the trio Brother Sun\, before thousands of UUs at the opening service of the Providence\, RI General Assembly. \nTogether and individually\, Reggie and Greg have brought the issue of Race before audiences all across North America. They share not only a story of overcoming\, but provide a living\, breathing example of celebration\, creative resistance\, and joy. There are many who say that they are the embodiment of those traits – that their talent and communication skills make their performance infectious. Both are committed professionally to inspiring people\, to encourage others to take that step beyond their comfort zone\, and as they reach across the racial divide\, to foster the relationships that are\, in the end\, a path to healing.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Economic Injustice 101
DESCRIPTION:UU FaithAction NJ and the Economic Task Force\, together with Work Environmental Council\, are hosting a training conference to help us learn how to effectively campaign to promote economic justice in our communities and our state.  We will learn how to be more effective at bringing people together to exercise political power. \n \nWHAT: Interactive Economic Training for Advocates Conference \nWHEN:  January 5\, 2019 \nTIME:  10 am to 3 pm \nWHERE:  The Unitarian Society of East Brunswick\, 176 Tices Lane\, East Brunswick \n\nTo get a little sense of how these educational/community-organizing trainings work\, please take a look at this 4 minute video\, which was produced after one of these trainings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umQjeGMxjDY\n\nThese are interactive workshops where we share our own experiences. Attending this training with other UUs will be a great way for us to learn more about each other and that knowledge will make us a stronger and more effective organization. I bet it will help us be effective advocates for economic justice!\n\nNo matter how much time we spend learning about what’s going on in the world\, sometimes the best thing to do in rough times is to come together. And maybe come up with things we can do. Even better if different groups are doing different things but pushing towards the same goals.\n\nPlease consider attending this training with other UUs\, but also people from other faiths and backgrounds. To move forward on our agenda for promoting Economic Justice we have to not only be well-educated on the inequities that exist but well-trained in organizing. Let’s put our heads together and work on a campaign with help from people who are doing this effectively nationwide.\n\nREGISTER HERE!!
