DESCRIPTION:What is pastoral care\, exactly? Pastoral care is support with navigating life—big and small things\, joys and hardships and all those mixed together. It’s not therapy\, but a way for us to be in community together\, supporting each other. This is a space to share the hard stuff and to hold the hard stuff that others are navigating in their lives. To read more about pastoral care and find some resources to locate pastoral care\, check out this post by UU Youth Ministry. \nDuring our time together\, our lead chaplain/facilitators will share opening and closing words\, and in between\, there is time for everyone to share what’s on their heards\, and receive what others are sharing about their own lives. It’s a supportive\, judgment-free place to connect with other trans/nonbinary+ people. \nRegistration\nJoin our pastoral care community–register here! \nThis year\, the pastoral space is for adults only. SUMMARY:Understanding the Needs of LGBTQIA+ Youth
DESCRIPTION:New Jersey has been at the forefront of fostering equality for its LGBTQIA+ young people\, including strong protections in the NJ Law Against Discrimination\, incorporation of LGBTQIA+ content in school curricula\, and the extension of rights for transgender people. Yet LGBTQIA+ youth remain at disproportionate risk for bullying\, harassment\, homelessness\, suicide\, and involvement in the foster care and law enforcement systems. This interactive training will introduce participants to the varied identities and experiences of LGBTQIA+ youth\, explore the types of bias and discrimination they face\, and offer strategies for protecting their rights in various settings. \nRegister for October 11 from 9:30am-11:30am \n\nDCR Anti-Discrimination Trainings\nThe New Jersey Division on Civil Rights (DCR) offers trainings aimed at preventing and addressing discrimination through its Education and Training Unit. These interactive sessions educate participants about their rights and responsibilities under the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination\, the New Jersey Family Leave Act\, the Fair Chance in Housing Act as well as raise awareness about current anti-bias issues. \nAll trainings are currently being offered for FREE to the public.

Again\, we’ll call on the Governor and Department of Environmental Protection to REJECT this project which could pollute the drinking water for nearly 4 million residents\, pollute the land and air\, and intensify climate impacts. \nLast month\, the NJ Superior Court ruled that the Department of Environmental Protection should not have issued a Highlands Act exemption to Tennessee Gas Pipeline (TGP) to build its massive East 300 pipeline expansion project in the Highlands Preservation Area. \nThis watershed decision comes after years of organizing from residents and activists across the region who have been fighting plans for this massive pipeline expansion project in NJ. SUMMARY:School Board Organizing  - Phone Bank
DESCRIPTION:This year\, SURJ is launching our first ever school board campaign\, “All In for All Students.” We’ve recruited a cohort of 17 teams across the country that are working at the school board level in their local communities\, some supporting candidates running for election and others working on issues like fighting for trans kids’ rights. \nYou’ll be hearing more from us in the next few months about how you can engage with this work. First up\, we’re going all in for students in OH. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSURJ is working with three chapters to support candidates in four school districts in Ohio running against Moms for Liberty candidates\, a ring wing national group based on homophobia and racism. Our chapters are working to make sure white people see differences like race and gender identity as things that make our school communities stronger. \nOur first phone bank is this Wednesday at 6 pm ET where we’ll be calling other SURJ members to turn them out for this work.
