SUMMARY:Showing Up For Each Other's Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Do you or someone you love have lived experience with mental health problems? Today about 20% of the adult population are diagnosed with a mental health problem. Yet\, even now\, mental health is often viewed through the lens of intolerance\, ignorance\, and fear. \nWe are pleased to host UU Rev. Barbara Meyers for the workshop “Showing Up for Each Other’s Mental Health.” This online Zoom presentation and discussion will be held on Saturday\, April 17\, 2021 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM (with a 10 minute break in the middle). \nRev. Meyers is a UU community minister with a mental health ministry based in Fremont\, California\, and President of the Board of the UU Mental Health Network (https://uumentalhealth.org/). She is the author of a mental health curriculum\, videos\, TV shows\, publications for congregations\, and the book HELD – Showing Up for each Other’s Mental Health\, published by Skinner House Books in August 2020 (available through the UUA bookstore and Amazon). \nIn this workshop\, Rev. Barbara Meyers will discuss\n–Stories from her mental health ministry – both how-to stories and how-not-to stories – giving guidance for congregants in the pews who want to help make a difference.\n–Show the importance of spiritual resources and peer groups\n–Discuss the impact that COVID is having on mental health and what people can do to mitigate it\n–The Unitarian Universalist Mental Health Network and it’s recent survey of mental health in the denomination \nA $20 per person donation is welcomed but not required.

SUMMARY:Transgender Day of Remembrance Interfaith Service
DESCRIPTION:All Are Welcome to Join in this Observance of Remembrance\, Mourning\, and Affirmation. \nThe Transgender Day of Remembrance is set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. With this service we raise public awareness\, mourn and honor the lives of our transgender and gender non-conforming kin and we express love and respect in the face of national indifference and hatred. \nThe Transgender Day of Remembrance was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester\, a transgenderwoman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death\, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. \nLet us gather via Zoom for this essential work which will move us through lamentation to solidarity and support. Questions can be directed to Rev. Anya Sammler-Michael at revanya@uumontclair.org. \nJoin on Zoom: https://zoom.us/j/96530433148 / Phone # +1 646 558 8656 / Meeting ID: 965 3043 3148

SUMMARY:Montclair Prophetic Council Event
DESCRIPTION:Montclair Prophetic Council: Join us in abolishing abusive policing \nGrounded in a shared movement toward collective liberation\, we will gather for a Prophetic Council on Tuesday\, August 25\, 2020\, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. \nThe Montclair Prophetic Council pledges to:\n–Educate ourselves about the force report data for our municipality\, history of policing and current demands in our community.\n–Commit to creating and/or supporting community responses that demilitarize our communities\n–Rely on community responses in the event of a non-violent crime\, rather than calling the police. These types of responses promote restorative justice \nRacialized and abusive policing is a part of our history and it continues to be the standard in New Jersey – a standard that demands witness and transformation. At this prophetic council\, we will listen\, openly\, and actively to the lived experience of our community members so that we might collaboratively face this injustice. Together\, we will lament as we educate our community to the often overlooked reality that abusive policing happens right here in Montclair. \nFollowing this council\, we will continue to gather and sustain a movement of allies\, collaborators\, and co-conspirators with a prophetic commitment to liberation. \nRegistration is required: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_h_4fCQ57RvinkgKXiq9VxA \nFor questions and/or connection\, please contact Rev.
