SUMMARY:Ending Solitary Confinement in NJ - A Talk at the Ethical Culture Society in Maplewood
DESCRIPTION:What is it like to be confined to a small cell for 23 hours a day\, months and years on end\, with minimal sensory stimulation and little or no human contact? How does it affect the brain and one’s psyche? Justice Rountree\, a survivor of solitary confinement\, and Tricia Idrobo\, a UUFANJ activist will speak about solitary confinement in New Jersey jails and prisons\, its detrimental effects on individuals and the community\, and initiatives to restrict solitary confinement\, including bills A314 and S3261 in the NJ legislature. There will also be an opportunity to “virtually” experience a solitary cell.

DESCRIPTION:This Conference will feature guest speaker Prof. Meghan Sacks\, PhD of Fairleigh Dickinson University.    Dr. Sacks is Associate Professor of Criminology and Criminology Program Director \nRegister Here\nDr. Sacks specializes in a number of areas\, including bail reform\, plea bargaining practices and prosecutorial power\, sentencing legislation and sex offender policies.  I can speak about the era of mass incarceration\, the causes and the effects as they pertain to communities and other areas. \nShe will be discussing\, among other things\, the root causes of over incarceration in New Jersey and the nation as a whole\, the short and long-term effects–and what we can do to reform them.
