SUMMARY:False ID:  Exoneree Malcolm Alexander\, Wrongfully Incarcerated 38 Years
DESCRIPTION:An ineffective trial lawyer and flawed eyewitness identification procedure destroyed the lives of Malcolm Alexander and his family for 38 years. \nIn February 1980\, a white woman accused Alexander\, who is black\, of sexual assault in Louisiana. Alexander maintained his innocence. A review of the one-day trial transcript revealed that his attorney\, who was subsequently disbarred\, failed to make an opening statement\, did not call any witnesses for the defense\, failed to adequately cross-examine the state’s witnesses\, and presented a closing argument that was a mere four pages of the 87-page transcript. Alexander was wrongfully convicted and received a life sentence. Alexander never gave up the fight to prove his innocence. In 2013\, hair evidence recovered from the location where the rape took place was found at the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office Crime Lab. Three crime scene hairs had the same DNA profile that did not match to Alexander or the victim. Alexander was exonerated in January of 2018. He is the Innocence Project’s longest-serving exonerated client. Today he is a member of the Innocence Project Exoneree Advisory Council. \nMr. Alexander will speak about his experience of wrongful imprisonment\, based in the systemic racism of mass incarceration. \nPresentation followed by Q&A.\n\n\n\nRegister Here

March 27 at 12pm – Transit Advocates to Host a Virtual “People’s Hearing” on NJ Transit Fare Hikes\nWHEN: Wednesday\, March 27 at 12:00pm \nWHERE: Watch the event live on New Jersey Policy Perspective’s YouTube page. \nWHAT: Transit advocates\, policy experts\, and community leaders from For The Many NJ and the Fund NJ Transit coalition will co-host a virtual public hearing on NJ Transit’s proposal to raise fares by 15 percent. \nThe event\, The People’s Virtual Hearing on NJ Transit Fare Hikes\, was organized by advocates after NJ Transit did not provide a virtual option for members of the public to testify on the agency’s plan to raise fares by 15 percent this year and 3 percent every year after. Despite numerous requests for a virtual option\, NJ Transit moved forward with in-person only hearings that were not accessible and sparsely attended. \nAdvocates\, riders\, local elected officials\, and community leaders have not only called on NJ Transit to provide a virtual option to testify\, but to refrain from adopting the double-digit fare increase now that Governor Murphy has proposed a dedicated source of state funding for the agency. \nWHO: \n\n\nAlex Ambrose\, New Jersey Policy Perspective (NJPP)\, emcee \n\n\nZoe Baldwin\, Regional Plan Association and Fund NJ Transit coalition \n\n\nEric Benson\, For The Many NJ \n\n\nAdditional organizations\, elected officials\, riders\, and members of the public to be announced at a later date \n\n\n  \n# # # \nFor The Many NJ is a statewide coalition of more than 40 organizations working to expand funding for essential services and improve budget practices to meet current and future needs\, especially for communities that have been historically left behind. \nThe Fund NJ Transit coalition seeks to bring greater prosperity and better transportation to communities across New Jersey. Pastoral care is support with navigating life—big and small things\, joys and hardships and all those mixed together. It’s not therapy\, but a way for us to be in community together\, supporting each other. This is a space to share the hard stuff and to hold the hard stuff that others are navigating in their lives. To read more about pastoral care and find some resources to locate pastoral care\, check out this post by UU Youth Ministry. \nDuring our time together\, our lead chaplain/facilitators will share opening and closing words\, and in between\, there is time for everyone to share what’s on their heards\, and receive what others are sharing about their own lives. It’s a supportive\, judgment-free place to connect with other trans/nonbinary+ people. \nThis year\, the pastoral space is for adults only. If you’re a child or a youth and you’d like to have a space to talk about the hard stuff\, let us know by registering for the pastoral space and putting a note in the registration form comments. When we have enough children and youth registered\, we’ll plan for opening additional spaces for different ages. And stay tuned for additional opportunities for children and youth to connect—we’re working on this! \nClosed captioning will be available\, and any common chat content will also be spoken aloud. She is a passionate activist who believes in centering the voices of historically marginalized communities in justice work and advocates for applying an intersectional lens as we work towards co-creating a just world for all. \nPrior to being called to All Souls Indy where she serves as the first called BIPOC minister\, Rev. Katie served Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church in the DC Metro as an Associate Minister. Before entering professional ministry\, she served as a lay campus minister at Florida Gulf Coast University\, had a rich career as a nurse\, and worked as the co-owner of a marketing and public relations company. She has a background in coaching and hypnosis\, too. \nRev. Katie is a 2017 graduate of Meadville Lombard Theological School. She serves as a Civil Air Patrol Chaplain with an emphasis on providing emergency/disaster ministry. She serves as a member of the UUA Ministerial Fellowship Committee\, the UU Trauma Response Ministry and she has worked with the Sophia Lyon Fahs Educational Collaborative in developing a multi-faith\, multicultural curriculum.  She is a co-author of the book Class Action: The Struggle with Classism in Unitarian Universalism and has contributed to the blog Braver/Wiser. \nAbout our Musical Artist\, Amanda Thomas \nAmanda is a retired UU music director and a member of Unity Temple Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Oak Park\, Illinois. She has been an active UU for 22 years\, and has served on the Board of Trustees for the Association of UU Music Ministries and on the UUA’s Music Leadership Certification Committee. She has led workshops and music at the UUA General Assembly as a soloist\, choir member\, worship leader\, and choir director for Ministry Days\, as well as for The Service of The Living Tradition. Amanda is now serving as a Troubadour and offering services as a freelance soloist\, music/choir consultant\, choral conductor\, workshop facilitator\, worship leader\, vocal instructor and respite music director.
