SUMMARY:For Such a Time as This: The Nowness of Reparations for Black People in NJ
DESCRIPTION:Saturday evening\, October 25\, 2025\nDoors open: 5:45 pm\, Light Dinner 6 pm\, Program starts at 7 pm\nThe Unitarian Society of Ridgewood\n113 Cottage Place\, Ridgewood\, NJ\nAnderson Hall\n \nSuggested donation : $15\nRSVP strongly encouraged: please send email to 113cottage@gmail.com \nThe Racial Justice Team of the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood invites you to an evening with Dr. Jean – Pierre Brutus of the NJ Institute for Social Justice \nJean-Pierre Brutus\, Senior Counsel at the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice\, is the primary organizer of the study done by the New Jersey Reparations Council\, which was established in 2023 and recently completed its two-year study. Their report tells the story of New Jersey’s deep but often overlooked history of slavery and its enduring impact on the contemporary life of Black people in our state. It draws a throughline from New Jersey’s deep embrace of slavery\, through its own Jim Crow period and the state’s systemic racism in more modern times\, to the two New Jerseys today\, which are characterized by a staggering $643\,000 racial wealth gap between Black and white families and one of the most segregated school systems in the nation.
