Joseph Chuman, retired human rights professor at Columbia and former leader of the Ethical Culture Society in Teaneck, will help us put this current crisis in historical context and explore with us how to confront it.
Dr. Joe Chuman is best known to us as the former leader of the Bergen County Ethical Culture Society, where he served as leader for 46 years, retiring in January 2020. He was also a part time leader at the New York Ethical Culture Society until retiring in 2024. During his long career, Joe has worked as an academic, a social justice activist, a speaker, and a writer. He has taught human rights in the Graduate School at Columbia University for more than 20 years, and he has also taught
human rights at Hunter College and at the U. N. University for Peace in Costa Rica and at other colleges.
In 2003, he founded the Northern New Jersey Sanctuary Coalition, (at that time it was the Bergen County Sanctuary Committee) and served as its president during its first decade. Joe has written numerous book chapters, encyclopedia entrees, and scores of Op-eds. Currently, he writes articles on political and socio-political issues on Substack and other social media outlets.
