Repro Justice Task Force Supports Murphy’s Abortion Access Proposals

By Jami Thall, Reproductive Justice Task Force Co-Chair

On May 12, 2022, in response to the leaked draft SCOTUS opinion that would essentially overturn Roe v Wade, Governor Murphy introduced a package of proposals designed to strengthen access to abortion care here in NJ.  The proposal includes the following:

  • Mandate insurance coverage for abortion care in NJ
  • Expand providers to include nurse practitioners, physician assistants & midwives
  • Provide coverage for all women in NJ, including persons without documentation
  • Create a fund to support clinics with security and access
  • Prohibit other states from taking legal action against providers & others here in NJ

Unfortunately there are already indications that the leaders of the NJ Senate & Assembly may be reluctant to move these proposals forward.  Planned Parenthood Action Fund of NJ has launched a lobbying effort, and is looking for folks to join in this effort.  You are invited to join “Reproductive Justice in the Rotunda” Thursdays in June, to engage in ‘hallway lobbying’ in the New Jersey State House.  For more information: www.weareplannedparenthoodaction.org/a/reprolobby

The Reproductive Justice Task Force of UU FaithAction NJ fully supports Gov. Murphy’s proposals, and we will be working to help move this legislation forward once it is introduced.
