We are sad to share the belated news that longtime UUFANJ member and activist, Al Stawsky of UU Congregation of the Palisades in Englewood NJ, died on May 21, 2025.
Al was a passionate justice advocate from the beginning of the original organization in 2010 (the newly formed UU Legislative Ministry of NJ), bringing years of experience to the organization especially in the field of racial justice. He was truly a “wise elder” among UUs in the Garden State, serving on the UULMNJ Board, as the longtime chair/co-chair of the Criminal Justice Reform/End the New Jim Crow Task Force and as part of the UUFANJ Policing Initiative working group following the police killings of two unarmed black men in July 2016.
For his years of dedication and service, UUFANJ awarded Al a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2020 Eco Gala in Summit NJ.
We will miss Al’s wry humor and steadfast devotion to building a better NJ and a better world and are proud to honor his memory by continuing the efforts he so deeply believed in.
