Partnering for Dignity: Support Access to Menstrual and Hygiene Products for Detained Individuals

By Jami Thall and Nicole Shultz

Unitarian Universalist FaithAction NJ is proud to partner with First Friends of New Jersey & New York to support people detained at Delaney Hall in Newark. Many individuals in immigration detention struggle to access basic hygiene supplies—especially menstrual products—which are essential for maintaining health, comfort, and dignity.

As part of our commitment to reproductive justice and human rights, our Reproductive Justice and Immigration Justice Task Forces are organizing a focused fundraising drive. All funds collected will be deposited directly into detainees’ commissary accounts so they can purchase the sanitary products they need but too often cannot obtain.

This is a simple, immediate, and meaningful way to affirm the inherent worth and dignity of every person.

How You Can Help

Let’s embody our UU values by supporting bodily autonomy, dignity, and care for those in detention.

Many thanks to Nicole Schultz who chairs the Menstrual Equity committee of our Reproductive Justice Task Force for facilitating this essential project. It quickly became clear that our Task Force alone could not provide menstrual and other hygiene products needed by our neighbors being detained at Delaney Hall. However, by collaborating with the Immigration Justice Task Force and our coalition partners at First Friends we were able to find a way to provide this essential support. We are always stronger and more effective when we can find ways to work together.
